As the rowdy Occupy L.A .gathering in downtown entered its fifth hour Monday morning, Nov. 28, 2011, Los Angeles Police Department officers declared unlawful assembly and moved to keep protesters off the street. Hundreds of police officers lined 1st Street in an attempt to contain the protesters, who overtook the streets around City Hall at midnight. At one point, a protester appeared to throw a wooden stick into the crowd of officers. A handful of people were arrested following the incident, according to LAPD Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese. Facing the morning rush hour expected in downtown, LAPD officers moved to control the crowd shortly before 5 a.m. It remained unclear whether City Hall would re-open. The building shut down at midnight and no one was allowed entry. Close to midnight, the crowd was estimated to be in the thousands. By 6 a.m., about 600 protesters remained.

Twenty-three anti-Wall Street protesters -- most of whom sat in a circle in a downtown financial district intersection and refused to disperse -- were arrested today, Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at the end of a rush-hour march that created headaches for some commuters but was generally peaceful. The bulk of the arrests were made around 9:30 a.m. at Fourth and Figueroa streets, where 21 people sat in a circle around a trio of tents that protesters erected in the intersection at the end of the march that was closely monitored by police.

Eight people were killed and one was critically injured on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 in a shooting at a Seal Beach hair salon. The suspect was taken into custody. The shooting occurred at about 1:20 p.m. at Salon Meritage in the 500 block of Pacific Coast Highway, according to Capt. Bruce McAltine of the Los Alamitos Police Department, which is helping Seal Beach police with the investigation. Six people were found dead inside the salon, police said. Three other people -- two men and a 73-year-old woman -- were rushed to a hospital in critical condition, McAltine said. Two of them later died.

Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch planned for a two-day 9-11 Memorial flag display along Corbin Avenue and Rinaldi Street to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. The community response was so positive that they have scheduled the display to continue thru Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011. The 2,977 flags cover the length of nearly three football fields. Colored ribbons indicate where the life was lost, yellow for the World Trade Center, green for Pentagon and purple for on an airplane. In addition, ribbons are blue for police officers and red for firefighters. To prepare the display, 120-plus volunteers worked more than 600 man hours over two weeks. A group of people tilted a burning BMW up to free motorcyclist Brandon Wright who was pinned underneath after he collided with the car while riding his motorcycle on U.S. 89 in Logan, Utah on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011. Authorities said Wright was riding his motorcycle near the Utah State University campus in Logan when the 21-year-old collided with the BMW that was pulling out of a parking lot. Tire and skid marks on the highway indicate that Wright laid the bike down and slid along the road before colliding with the car, Assistant Police Chief Jeff Curtis said.

“Jackass” star Ryan Dunn, who along with his castmates made Americans cringe and snicker through vulgar stunts in their multimillion-dollar TV and movie franchise, was killed early Monday, June 20, 2011, in a fiery car crash. He was 34. Dunn, a daredevil whose most famous skits included diving into a sewage tank and shoving a toy car into his rectum, was driving his 2007 Porsche in suburban Philadelphia when it went off the road into the woods and burst into flames. A passenger was also killed, and speed may have been a factor in the crash, West Goshen Township police said.

In a Newhall crash caught on security video in the early morning hours on Friday, June 17, 2011, firefighters needed the jaws of life to rescue a male driver and female passenger who sped away from a deputy as he attempted a possible drunken driving traffic stop, smashing their Nissan into the Chevron gas station in at Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway. A man and woman were trapped inside the destroyed vehicle, which was wedged between a post and the collapsed roof, fire officials said. Firefighters also put out a small fire at the scene. One motorcycle officer died and another was critically injured Thursday, May 26, 2011, in a traffic collision during a funeral procession for another officer in Torrance. The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. at 227th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. Both officers were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where one was pronounced dead. Maria Fernanda Romero Martinez, a 28-year-old actress/model who uses the stage name Fernanda Romero pleaded guilty on Jan. 28, 2011 to making a false statement to immigration officials. She and husband Kent Ross, also 28, of Park La Brea, whose trial on charges of engaging in a “green-card marriage” ended in a hung jury both agreed to plead guilty to federal charges of lying to immigration officials, according to court papers filed Jan. 21, 2011 in Los Angeles. Ross' plea is pending.

The couple were initially charged with federal marriage fraud and making false statements during Romero’s application for a green card.

The charges carry a maximum of five years in prison and potential fines of $250,000, prosecutors said. The case hinged on whether the Mexico City-born Romero paid Ross to marry her and then lied about it to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services so the Westwood resident could obtain permanent resident status.

“It was a fraud and a sham ... solely to obtain a green card,” Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Left told the jury last year, arguing that the couple never lived together nor had any intention of establishing a life together.

Romero has appeared in television shows and movies, including “The Eye” alongside Jessica Alba in 2008 and in the Mexican soap opera “Eternamente Tuya” (“Forever Yours”). She has also hosted the Univision Spanish-language reality show “Control.”

Ross described himself as the manager of a pizza restaurant and a working musician who played in a band called The Electric Uh-Oh.
