Caption: The cockpit of Craig Schulze's Lancair experimental aircraft photographed prior to a flight out of Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, CA, on Wednesday, June 6, 2007. In a growing trend, Schulze is one of over 5000 people who own experimental aircrafts which must be issued airworthiness certificate for "kit built" planes by the FAA prior to flight and have different cirtification methods than manufactured planes. Schulze and others build these experimental planes from composite materials such as fiberglass and carbon fiber which 90% of military planes are made of which makes them structurally safer than crafts using aluminum.
