Refurbishing the forest two years after the Station Fire

Danny Saunders stands next to a Spanish Broom plant, demonstrating the size that some of them can grow to. Spanish Broom is one of the plants that conservationists want to remove from the forest because it is not native to the environment. Members of the Student Conservation Association took members of the media on a tour of the Wildwood Picnic Area in Big Tujunga Canyon where they spent portions of the past two years rehabilitating the land, campsites and picnic areas after the 2009 Station fire.
Two and four-person, college-aged crews and two crews of local high school students worked four days a week, ten hours a day throughout both summers to restore nearly 50 miles of the Angeles National Forest.

Fast-moving flames fueled by dry brush and gusty winds forced residents of ranch homes and citrus farms to evacuate Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, as firefighters worked to contain an out-of-control blaze that has scorched 6,000 acres and injured two. The fire broke out at 10:40 a.m. at a ranch near East Guiberson and Cavin roads and is believed sparked by manure that spontaneously combusted, according to the Ventura County Sheriff. By early afternoon, more than 400 firefighters from across California had been deployed along with a handful of water-dropping helicopters. (Photos by Andy Holzman/Staff Photographer)
