Bear out of the woods in Montrose

  • A California Brown bear weighting in excess of 400 pounds was seen wandering down Briggs Ave. in Montrose this morning at 7 am. According to residents in the area, Tuesday is trash day and the bear was looking for food. Department of Fish and Game arrived put a tranquilizer dart into the bear when they first confronted it on Mayfield and Briggs Avenue. The startled bear then tried to escape by crossing fences, and wandering through the backyards of homes in the neighborhood. Eventually, the bear found himself and cornered on a walkway in the rear of an apartment complex in the 2500 Block of Montrose Ave. The tranquilized bear became drowsy, but was not yet subdued enough to move. Shortly after 9 am, Lieutenant Marty Wall from the Fish Game, was able to approach the bear and inject it with enough tranquilizers to put the bear to sleep. Once subdued, the bear was put on a tarp and several sheriffs deputies, and Fish and Game officers dragged the bear out of the apartment complex and placed it in a cylindrical steel elongated barrel known as a bear trap. Fish and game will take the bear into an undisclosed location in the nearby Angeles National Forrest where it will be released. 4/10/2012.
