  • Los Angeles county officials celebrated the completion of the $100 Million Big Tujunga Dam seismic retrofit project. Big T was built in the early 1930's for flood protection and water conservation. Following the 1971 Sylmar earthquake, a seismic analysis of the dam resulted in its storage capacity being severely curtailed. Now, with nearly 75,000 Cubic yards of concrete reinforcement, the dam is stronger than ever. Sunland, Ca 7-20-2011. (John McCoy/Staff Photographer)

Opening of Trout Season in the Eastern Sierra

  • 14 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • Thousands of Anglers descended on the Easter Sierra for the opening of trout season. While temperatures in the early morning on June Lake were in the low 20Ős clear skies and temperatures in the low 50Ős were the norm later in the day. The June Lake Loop was besieged by ice, with only 30 percent of the lake open to anglers. Throughout the day sunshine pounded down on the frozen surface causing much of the ice to break apart and melt. Mark Kanowsky of Lakewood, who reeled in a 4 pound 12 ounce rainbow, recorded the largest fish caught at June Lake. Convict Lake appeared to the hot spot for Sierra fishermen with several limits being reported, and many fish weighing in the 2-4 pound class. The largest being a 5 pound 2 ounce rainbow. 52 mile kayak trip down the LA River

  • 10 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • (l-r) Fredrick Reimers and George Wolf carry a kayak across Owensmouth Ave. on their way to the headwater of the Los Angeles River. They held a press conference, but there was not enough water in the river to launch their watercraft. The LA River Expedition 2008 Kayak Team had to assemble their flotilla further downstream in the river next to Balboa Park. The boaters are on a 3-day quest to navigate 52 miles of the river from its source in Canoga Park to its estuary in Long Beach. The County of Los Angeles and the Army Corps have denied permits to access the LA River for safety reasons. In a press release, the Kayak Team states, "The Expedition takes the stance that public trust law in California contains certain inalienable rights of access to the waters of the U.S, and that these time-honored, common sense laws supercede all bureaucratic misgivings, justifications and obfuscations regarding the denial of our request."
