Petersen Automotive Museum Supercars And More
24 photos

Supercars: When Too Much is Almost Enough is the newest exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum and will run through October 16, 2011. Like supermarkets, supermodels, and supercomputers, supercars represent an extreme. More than mere transportation, they offer a bold and extroverted means to express oneself. Supercars have existed since the first decade of the twentieth century and while their mechanical and design specifications have evolved from era to era, they have always had in common immensely powerful engines, minimal passenger carrying capacity, adventurous mechanical specifications, and a commanding presence. Other displays include Alternative Power, Classic Hot Rods and Custom Cars, Hollywood Gallery, Hot Wheels Hall Of Fame and more. Go to www.peterson.org for more information.

Classic car buffs came out in force to see many dozen restored autos parked at the old Rydell Chevrolet lot at the corner of Van Nuys and Burbank boulevards and cruising Van Nuys Boulevard in what has become a monthly event (on the second Wednesday) run by the Van Nuys Cruising Association (http://www.vannuyscruisingassociation.com/)

On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, I pretty much stumbled into what turned out to be the absolutely coolest thing to happen to Van Nuys Boulevard in 20 years: The Van Nuys Cruising Association's Cruising Van Nuys Blvd. night, which filled up both the Rydell Chevrolet lot on the southwest corner of Van Nuys and Burbank boulevards as well as the "west" lot of Ralphs market across the street and a block south.
Many dozen cars were parked for our viewing pleasure. And there were dozens more actually cruising the boulevard just like they did decades ago.
You couldn't ask for more of a "happening" on Van Nuys Boulevard.
Since these photos were first shot, I've learned that Cruising Van Nuys Boulevard is indeed continuing. The classic cars return on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 to the boulevard for another night of cruising. Expect the Rydell lot at Van Nuys and Burbank boulevards in Van Nuys to start filling up at 6 p.m., with the actual cruising starting at 8 p.m. Check the event's official Web site and Come on Feel the Nuys for more details on the Aug. 12 Cruise Night.
